About This Beach
Sonoma Coast State Beach encompasses multiple beach areas along a breathtaking 17-mile stretch of rugged coastline. This dramatic shoreline features towering bluffs, sea stacks, rocky coves, and sandy beaches accessible via numerous parking areas and trails along Highway 1. Beaches such as Schoolhouse, Portuguese, and Salmon Creek offer distinct characteristics from expansive sandy shores to intimate coves and tide pools. The Kortum Trail connects several beach access points along a relatively flat blufftop path with spectacular coastal views. Due to cold water, dangerous currents, and unpredictable wave patterns, swimming is generally not recommended, but the beaches are ideal for beachcombing, photography, and whale watching during migration seasons. Several campgrounds in the area provide overnight accommodations for extended exploration of this magnificent coastline.
