About This Beach
San Onofre State Beach encompasses several distinct areas spread over 3,000 acres of scenic coastline. Trestles Beach at the northern end features world-class surf breaks that host international competitions. The central section includes Old Man’s, a gentler break popular with longboarders and beginning surfers, embodying the beach’s laid-back surf culture dating back to the 1930s. San Onofre Bluffs to the south offers primitive campsites atop coastal bluffs with access trails to the beach below. The nearby San Mateo Campground is connected to Trestles by the 1.5-mile Panhe Nature Trail. Despite its proximity to San Diego and Orange County, the beach maintains a rustic, natural character prized by visitors seeking an authentic California beach experience.
