About This Beach
Rodeo Beach is a unique pebbly beach located in the Marin Headlands section of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area, just north of San Francisco. Unlike most sandy beaches, Rodeo Beach is composed of colorful, polished pebbles including jasper, carnelian, black agate, and jade, making it a favorite for rock collectors. The beach sits at the mouth of a coastal lagoon that attracts abundant birdlife, while the surrounding headlands offer hiking trails with spectacular views of the Pacific Ocean and Golden Gate Bridge. Though swimming is hazardous due to strong currents and cold water, the beach is popular for surfing, especially during winter swells, and is one of the few dog-friendly beaches in the area.
