Home/Texas/High Island Beach

About This Beach

High Island Beach sits at the northeastern end of the Bolivar Peninsula, offering a less developed beach experience with unique geological features. The name comes from the salt dome that raises the community 38 feet above sea level—unusual elevation for the Texas coast. The beach is bordered by the McFaddin National Wildlife Refuge, creating excellent bird watching opportunities, especially during migration seasons. The area is known for four world-famous bird sanctuaries managed by the Houston Audubon Society. Beach camping is permitted without fees, though limited facilities are available. The relative isolation and lack of development appeal to those seeking a more natural coastal experience.
