About This Beach
Glass Beach in Fort Bragg is famous for its abundance of sea glass created from years of dumping household garbage at the site until 1967, when the practice was stopped and cleanup efforts began. Natural wave action over decades transformed discarded glass into smooth, colorful pebbles that cover the beach in place of sand. The beach is now part of MacKerricher State Park and offers fascinating tide pools containing diverse marine life including anemones, sea stars, and hermit crabs. A blufftop trail provides scenic views of the coastline, including access to additional coves containing sea glass. While collecting glass is officially discouraged to preserve the site for future visitors, the beach remains a unique example of nature’s ability to transform environmental damage into an attraction.
