About This Beach

China Cove is a small, emerald-green cove tucked within Point Lobos State Natural Reserve, often described as “the crown jewel of the California State Park system.” This picturesque cove is characterized by its intensely colored water, dramatic rock formations, and small pebble beach that is occasionally accessible by stairs when conditions permit. A harbor seal pupping area, the cove is closed seasonally (April-June) to protect nursing seals and their pups. Surrounded by cypress trees and coastal scrub, the area offers exceptional photographic opportunities and viewing points from the trails above. The cove is part of a protected marine reserve where diverse underwater habitats attract scuba divers, though beach access is limited to preserve the delicate ecosystem.
