About This Beach

Bolivar Flats Beach is part of the Globally Important Bird Area managed by Houston Audubon Society. The unique habitat includes salt marsh, mud flats, and beach, creating one of the most important shorebird sanctuaries on the Gulf Coast. During migration seasons, tens of thousands of birds can be observed in a single day, including rare species. The beach allows vehicle access on designated routes with careful attention to protected areas. Limited facilities make this more suitable for day trips rather than extended stays. The area is renowned for its spectacular sunrise photography opportunities with silhouettes of shore birds against the dawn sky. The beach is conveniently accessible via the Galveston-Port Bolivar Ferry, which is free and runs 24 hours daily.
