About This Beach

Black’s Beach stretches along the base of 300-foot cliffs below Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve, creating one of San Diego’s most isolated and dramatic shorelines. The challenging access—via steep trails from street level—helps maintain the beach’s uncrowded nature despite its reputation for excellent surfing conditions. The northern section of Black’s Beach is unofficially clothing-optional, being one of the largest nude beaches in the United States, while the southern portion tends to attract serious surfers drawn to its consistent waves created by underwater canyons. The beach offers spectacular views of the coast with the Torrey Pines Gliderport atop the cliffs, where colorful hang gliders and paragliders soar overhead. The remote setting means minimal facilities, emphasizing Black’s natural, untamed character.
