About This Beach
Asilomar State Beach encompasses a scenic one-mile strip of rocky shoreline and dune habitat on the Monterey Peninsula. A paved coastal trail runs parallel to the beach, offering stunning views of the Pacific Grove Marine Gardens State Marine Conservation Area offshore. The beach is characterized by rocky outcroppings, tide pools, and small sandy coves rather than an expansive sandy shore. During low tide, the pools reveal a rich diversity of marine life including sea stars, anemones, and hermit crabs. Adjacent to the beach is the Asilomar Dunes Natural Preserve, protecting rare plants and restored dune habitat. The beach is particularly known for its spectacular sunsets and the historic Asilomar Conference Grounds, an Arts and Crafts-style complex designed by Julia Morgan.
