Beaches for Remote
Nanny Goat Beach (Sapelo Island)
Named for the goats that once grazed here, this remote beach on Sapelo Island offers excellent shell collecting and swimming opportunities. Near the University of Georgia Marine Institute and accessible through guided tours or by reservation.
Plum Orchard Beach (Cumberland Island)
Located near the historic Plum Orchard Mansion on undeveloped Cumberland Island. Accessible by ferry and then hiking or biking several miles. Features pristine, untouched shoreline with excellent opportunities for viewing wildlife including wild horses.
Coast Guard Beach (Cumberland Island)
Located near the Sea Camp ranger station and campground on Cumberland Island. Accessible via ferry and a short walk. Features wide, flat beaches with opportunities to see wild horses and other wildlife. Limited facilities available at the Sea Camp area.
Raccoon Island Beach
Part of the Blackbeard Island National Wildlife Refuge, this remote beach is accessible only by private boat. Features pristine shoreline, excellent bird watching, and opportunities to see loggerhead sea turtles during nesting season. No facilities available.
Sapelo Island
Remote barrier island accessible only by state ferry, featuring pristine beaches, a restored lighthouse, and the historic Reynolds Mansion. Home to the Gullah-Geechee community of Hog Hammock and the University of Georgia Marine Institute.
Daufuskie Island
Remote, car-free island accessible only by ferry, featuring pristine beaches, Gullah heritage, and a rustic atmosphere. Known for its artisan crafts, historic buildings, and as the setting for Pat Conroy’s “The Water Is Wide.”
Carova Beach
The northernmost and most remote Outer Banks beach community, accessible only by 4×4 vehicles driving on the beach. No paved roads, stores, or commercial development. Famous for wild horses that roam freely among beach homes.
Bethel Beach Natural Area Preserve
Protected coastal habitat featuring undeveloped beaches, salt marshes, and maritime forests. Limited facilities with focus on conservation and wildlife observation. Free access with important shorebird nesting areas and pristine natural setting.
Smith Island
Barrier island in Virginia’s portion of Chesapeake Bay Watershed, part of the Smith Island complex. Undeveloped natural beaches with limited access (primarily through guided tours). Important wildlife habitat with minimal human impact.
