Amelia Island
Northernmost barrier island in Florida featuring 13 miles of pristine beaches, luxury resorts, and historic Fernandina Beach with Victorian architecture. One of the few places in Florida offering horseback riding on the beach. Known for its golf courses, natural beauty, and upscale yet relaxed atmosphere.
Gould’s Inlet (St. Simons)
A scenic coastal inlet between St. Simons and Sea Island, popular for fishing, bird watching, and nature photography. Features a wooden observation deck and is a designated stop on the Colonial Coast Birding Trail. Not ideal for swimming due to strong currents.
Cabretta Beach (Sapelo Island)
An undeveloped, wild beach on Sapelo Island accessible via the island’s ferry and transportation system. Features primitive campsites near the beach, excellent birding opportunities, and a truly pristine coastal environment. Permits required for camping.
Glory Beach (Jekyll Island)
Named after the Civil War movie “Glory” which filmed scenes here, this beach features a scenic boardwalk through maritime forest and dunes. Offers views of Jekyll Creek and a quieter experience. Accessible via the Jekyll Island Trail System.
Mitchelville Beach
Secluded beach on Hilton Head with historical significance as the site of the first self-governed freedmen’s town after the Civil War. Features excellent bird watching, dramatic tides, and fossil hunting. Less crowded than other island beaches.
Edisto Beach
One of South Carolina’s least commercialized beach towns with a focus on natural beauty. Features Edisto Beach State Park, the ACE Basin nature preserve, and excellent shelling opportunities. Known for its family-friendly, relaxed atmosphere.
Hammocks Beach State Park
Features Bear Island, a 3-mile-long barrier island accessible by ferry or kayak. Offers pristine beaches with limited development, primitive camping, and excellent opportunities for wildlife viewing and stargazing.
Bethel Beach Natural Area Preserve
Protected coastal habitat featuring undeveloped beaches, salt marshes, and maritime forests. Limited facilities with focus on conservation and wildlife observation. Free access with important shorebird nesting areas and pristine natural setting.
Belle Isle State Park Beach
Northern Neck park on Rappahannock River featuring small beach area, boat launches, and diverse habitats. Offers camping, cabin rentals, hiking trails, and fishing opportunities. Entry fee required with focus on quiet natural experience.
