Nanny Goat Beach (Sapelo Island)

Ossabaw Island Beach
Protected barrier island accessible only with permission for research, education, or cultural purposes. Features pristine beaches, abundant wildlife, and historic sites. Managed by the Ossabaw Island Foundation with very limited public access.
Mitchelville Beach
Secluded beach on Hilton Head with historical significance as the site of the first self-governed freedmen’s town after the Civil War. Features excellent bird watching, dramatic tides, and fossil hunting. Less crowded than other island beaches.
Pawleys Island
“Arrogantly shabby” historic beach town known for its handwoven hammocks and laid-back atmosphere. Features historic homes, traditional beach houses, and minimal commercial development. Perfect for those seeking a quieter beach experience.
Daufuskie Island
Remote, car-free island accessible only by ferry, featuring pristine beaches, Gullah heritage, and a rustic atmosphere. Known for its artisan crafts, historic buildings, and as the setting for Pat Conroy’s “The Water Is Wide.”
Colonial Beach
Second-longest public beach in Virginia located on the Potomac River. Features historic small town with golf cart culture, marina, fishing pier, and boardwalk. Free access with nearby restaurants, shops, and water activities.
King-Lincoln Park Beach
Small beach area on Hampton Roads harbor in historic southeast community of Newport News. Features fishing pier, community center, playground, and basketball courts. Free access with focus on community recreation.
Greenwell State Park
St. Mary’s County park on the Patuxent River featuring a small beach area, historic manor house, and equestrian facilities. Offers kayak launches, hiking trails, and fishing opportunities. Entry fee required with limited beach facilities.
Beverly Beach
Historic beach community in Anne Arundel County on Chesapeake Bay. Limited public beach access through community arrangement. Formerly a popular resort destination in the early 20th century that has evolved into a residential community.
