Rockaway Beach
New York City’s only legal surfing beach with a revitalized boardwalk, food concessions, and playgrounds. A diverse, vibrant beach accessible via subway. Popular with surfers and city-dwellers.
Hammonasset Beach State Park
Connecticut’s largest shoreline park featuring over 2 miles of sandy beach on Long Island Sound. Includes Meigs Point Nature Center, campground with 550 sites, and extensive recreational facilities.
Silver Sands State Park
Features a beach, restored salt marsh, and Charles Island accessible via a tombolo (sand bar) at low tide. Offers walking trails, good bird watching, and fishing opportunities in diverse coastal habitats.
Sherwood Island State Park
Connecticut’s first state park featuring beaches divided into East, West, and Center sections with different characteristics. Home to the state’s 9/11 Memorial and a nature center focusing on coastal ecology.
East Beach (Housatonic)
A beach within Long Beach Wildlife Area with pristine, undeveloped shoreline. Offers excellent opportunities for wildlife observation and fishing adjacent to the Great Meadows Marsh unit of the wildlife refuge.
