Editorial Policy

Last updated: October 26, 2026

Planning a trip to the coast requires accurate, verifiable logistics rather than generic postcard descriptions. A beach that looks calm in a photograph can have unguarded rip currents, seasonal dog bans for threatened shorebirds, or resident-only parking lots that turn visitors away at the gate. This Editorial Policy outlines how The Beach Directory (thebeachdirectory.com), a publication of Viking Trading Group LLC, researches, verifies, and updates beach listings, regional comparison guides, and coastal gear articles.

1. Primary Sources for Beach Access & Safety Data

When we publish or update a beach visiting guide or regional comparison table, we verify facts against official public agencies:

  • Park & Municipal Operating Agencies: Parking fees, resident sticker requirements, operating hours, camping reservation windows, lifeguard seasons, dog regulations, and accessibility amenities (wheelchair mats and beach wheelchairs) are checked against state park departments (such as California State Parks, Oregon State Parks, Florida State Parks, New York State Parks, and Massachusetts DCR), National Park Service seashore portals, and municipal recreation pages.
  • Water Quality & Swimming Advisories: Because bacterial water quality readings and health advisories change day by day, we never copy a single day’s water quality reading into static text. Instead, we provide direct links to the official state beach monitoring portal (such as Texas Beach Watch, Oregon Beach Monitoring Program, Washington Department of Ecology, or NYC Health) and the U.S. EPA BEACON system so readers can check live advisories before entering the water.
  • NOAA Tides & Water Temperatures: For coastal ocean and bay beaches, we identify the nearest NOAA Center for Operational Oceanographic Products and Services (CO-OPS) tide station and water temperature sensor (within 10 miles for temperature reporting) and link directly to the live station page.
  • OpenStreetMap Amenity Verification: Mapped physical facilities (restrooms, showers, drinking water points, picnic grills, and parking lots) are cross-checked against OpenStreetMap data with proper ODbL attribution.

2. Handling Unknown or Changing Information

If an official municipal or park source does not publish a specific detail (such as exact off-season restroom winterization dates or unguarded swim rules), we omit that claim or mark it as unverified rather than guessing. Every verified Visiting block carries the month and year it was last checked against the linked agency page.

3. Coastal Gear Comparisons & Affiliate Links

Our coastal equipment guides compare surfboards, stand-up paddleboards, coolers, swim goggles, and sun protection using objective physical specifications (liter volume, board dimensions, PVC layer construction, lens polarization, and carry weight). Affiliate links never determine our technical recommendations. See our Affiliate Disclosure for complete details.

4. Corrections & Updates

If you notice a park fee adjustment, storm closure, or broken official website link on any page, please send the URL and source link to editorial@thebeachdirectory.com or visit our Contact Us page.
