About This Beach
Goat Rock Beach is part of the Sonoma Coast State Park, featuring a sand beach nestled between the Russian River and the massive Goat Rock sea stack that gives the beach its name. The beach is known for its colony of harbor seals that frequently haul out near the river mouth, particularly during pupping season from March to August. Protected viewing areas allow visitors to observe the seals without disturbing them. The beach sits at the terminus of the Russian River, creating interesting ecological dynamics as the river sometimes forms a lagoon before breaking through to the ocean. Interpretive signs explain the area’s natural history and geology, while picnic tables situated on bluffs above the beach offer dramatic perspectives for outdoor dining.
